50 Golden Hits - From Then Till Now
2012 is the year Philomena Begley celebrates her 50th Anniversary in the world of show business. H&H Music proudly join these celebrations with a 3CD set From Then To Now - 50 Golden Hits, compiled with Philomena to include the best of the wealth of music and emotions that she has bought to us over five decades of great recordings.
BORSTAL BOY
Shawn Hatosy and Danny Dyer star in this gritty adapation of Irish writer Brendan Behan’s experiences in a British borstal. During World War II, at the age of sixteen, Brendan travelled to Liverpool with a suitcase of explosives. However his bombing mission was foiled when he was apprehended and subsequently imprisoned. Now forced to do time with the ‘enemy’, Brendan finds his staunch republican beliefs are put to the ultimate test.
SONG FOR A RAGGY BOY
Set in 1939, Song For A Raggy Boy tells the powerful story of what happens when William Franklin (Aidan Quinn), is appointed by principal of St. Jude’s Reformatory School as the only lay teacher, amongst a staff of Catholic Brothers. Franklin’s teaching methods are diametrically opposed to those of the Brothers’, who revert to the usage of verbal and physical abuse.
THE MAGDALENE SISTERS
Based on the true accounts of the Magdalene laundries in Ireland, which eventually closed in 1996 after an estimated 30,000 women had been detained, THE MAGDALENE SISTERS follows the story of three of these young women in Dublin, 1964. Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff) is raped by her cousin at a family wedding and is considered to have shamed her family. Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone), resident of a local orphanage, is unaware that her blossoming good looks are set to undermine her future and Rose (Dorothy Duffy) has just given birth out of wedlock and has her son forcibly removed from her. All three are sent to the Magdalene asylum against their wills.
Reunion - A Decade of Solas
The finest Celtic ensemble this country has ever produced...combines a deep empathy for the wild grace of traditional music with a savvy understanding of modern arrangement, creating a remarkably contemporary and timeless sound that led them immediately to Celtic superstardom...uniquely fluid, warmly melodic and robust” —The Boston Globe
Solas (Seamus Egan, Winifred Horan, Mick McAuley, Deirdre Scanlan, Eamon McElholm) with founding members Karan Casey, John Doyle and John Williams, plus Donal Clancy and special guests Antje Duvekot, Chico Huff, Ben Wittman, John Anthony and Michael Aharon. Since forming in 1996, Solas (meaning “light” in Gaelic) has been widely proclaimed as the most popular, influential, and exciting Celtic band to ever emerge from the United States. Even before the release of their self-titled debut, The Boston Herald trumpeted Solas as “the first truly great Irish band to arise from America” while The Irish Echo ranked Solas among “the most exciting bands anywhere in the world.”
Solas celebrated their 10 year anniversary with a spectacular reunion concert that featured all the band’s current and past members. The concert was filmed in front of a live, hometown audience in Philadelphia, PA on September 13th, 2005 and the resulting DVD performance captures all the magic of this one time event. The DVD includes a full hour, 45 minute concert recorded in stereo and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound together with over 30 minutes of live performance extras, interviews, an extensive photo gallery of individual and band photos and behind the scene views of the rehearsals.
